Could the Oralift, a plastic mouthguard, be the answer to looking ten years younger without cosmetic surgery? According to inventor London dentist Dr Nick Mohindra, this plastic mouthguard can help patients look younger by sculpturing their faces.

The Oralift is claimed can do many different things including:

Eliminate hollows under the eyes

Plump up the cheeks

Give fuller lips and a wider, more even smile

Tighten the jawline

Tone facial muscles

Soften nose-to-mouth lines

Tighten loose skin under the jawline and neck

Make the face more symmetrical

Give clearer skin

Vanish facial thread veins

Help remove or reduce the look of crow’s feet

Naturally, not every patient is claiming to see all of the above however most patients should see a more youthful appearance within a couple of days of starting the Oralift treatment. Peak ‘youthfulness’ should appear after three years of use. Mohindra claims that the benefits last pretty much forever.

For a piece of oral plastic, the claims really are fantastic. So how does this miracle mouthguard work?

To fit, the Oralift mouthguard is placed in a microwave to soften the plastic. It is then fitted to the lower teeth and allowed to cool for a few seconds where it will harden back into shape. The mouthguard itself is the shape of a horseshoe and contains two platform blocks above the rear teeth – and it is these platforms that are the key to the device.

The theory behind the Oralift is that as we get older we lose facial ‘height’, mainly between the nose and chin area. Partly this is due to the grinding of teeth or the natural wearing down of teeth through eating. By using the mouthguard you are increasing this height again and therefore reversing this particularly ageing process.

When our jaws our relaxed we have a ‘freeway space’ between our back teeth of between 1 and 3 millimetres. By wearing the Oralift mouth guard, this freeway space is stretched to up to a centimetre. As the stretching begins, the facial muscles are put under a little stress and it is claimed that this process allows them to release proteins that increase collagen, thus plumping out the skin. The increase in blood flow to the skin helps make it brighter and clearer and gives it a healthy glow.

The Oralift is said to be quite comfortable to wear however it can be difficult for the wearer to have a natural facial expression when wearing it. For best results, the patient has to keep their lips closed whilst wearing the mouthguard and not allow their back teeth to rest on the Oralift’s platforms. Whilst the patient is wearing the Oralift, they should not talk or eat.

When being fitted with the Oralift, the dentist should give you ‘training’ and a schedule of when to wear it. Typically, it will start with a day of two sessions of 15 minutes a piece followed by two rest days. The next sessions are half an hour long each every third day, building up to two 2 hour sessions every third day. The dentist will monitor the progress of the Oralift and may fit a new mouthguard with higher platforms to increase the effect if deemed necessary.

At £575, the Oralift isn’t cheap however if you are considering a facelift, this option is most definitely cheaper and comes without the risks normally associated with cosmetic surgery.

A mini facelift is being hailed as a cure for migraines. The facelift is combined with Botox and is said to help cure some patient’s migraines.

Current migraine drugs do not work for everyone. Botox is one option for migraines but is not a permanent solution and also does not work in all cases. However one cosmetic surgeon has discovered that by combining a forehead lift with Botox can help relieve the pain of migraines in around 90 percent of patients, with few side effects.

Dr Guyuron discovered that by removing the supercilli muscle in the face – the major muscle involved in frowning – seemed to stop or lessen migraines in many of his patients. Dr Guyuron believes that migraine headaches are caused by nerves in the face, neck and/or scalp being irritated by overly tight muscles so by loosening up these muscles, the pain can be cured.

The procedure involves having Botox injected into the supercilli muscle, freezing it and releasing some of the pressure on the surrounding nerves. A small cut is then made into the muscle and a small part is removed. The gap in the muscle is filled in with fat, normally taken from the upper eyelid. This cosmetic procedure not only tends to ease migraine headache pain but also smooths out frown lines giving the patient a more youthful look.

Dr Guyuron has started some tests on the procedure by comparing this surgery against a dummy treatment where patients are operated on but their muscles are left intact. Initial results show that 57 percent of patients who had the full operation have been fully cured after a year compared with just 4 percent on the dummy operation. 83 percent on patients who had the full operation said that after a year, their migraines had fully stopped or the pain was significantly less.

Other doctors have been working on similar procedures and have reported similar results.

Facial acupunctures are popular with many as they are thought to be a non-invasive alternative to facelifts. Facial acupunctures claim to help slow down the anti-aging process by helping to boost collagen production, strengthen skin cells and reduce the look of wrinkles.

Cosmetic acupuncture practitioners target particular areas and muscles in the face and by pressing and gently massaging, make the facial tissue contract and tighten, thus ironing out wrinkles. The treatment it also said to help boost collagen production which helps plump up the skin and even the skin tone.

Benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture

In the first instance, the procedure is meant to be relaxing therefore this cosmetic treatment is said to be good for the mind. The process is meant to get rid of energy blockages which again are good for general mental well-being.

The physical benefits are said to include:

helping the skin achieve a natural glow

softening of lines and wrinkles

reduction of dark under-eye circles

increase in collagen production

increase in skin elasticity

better skin tone

Cosmetic Acupuncture Negatives

The major drawback of cosmetic acupuncture is that there is little evidence that the treatment is effective. Although many people swear by the technique, there is little scientific evidence to show that any of the supposed physical health benefits actually exist.

Over time, cosmetic acupuncture may also work out more expensive than a conventional facelift. Facelifts are normally paid in one lump sum however cosmetic acupuncture sessions should be done on a regular basis – and this means that even though they are a fraction of the cost of a face lift, the cosmetic acupuncture costs may end up being far more than the cosmetic surgery over time.

The Ribbon Lift facelift is one of the latest cosmetic surgery trends with stars like Madonna reportedly having had this surgery done.

So what exactly is a ribbon lift? Put quite simply, a rube like device is placed underneath the skin. This tube has lots of tiny hooks on it that attach itself to the muscle and tissue under the skin. When the tube is pulled up, it lifts the entire facial area.

The tube is actually called an ‘Endotine Ribbon’ device, hence why the cosmetic procedure is known as the ‘ribbon lift’. Hooks actually line just the one side of the ribbon and the whole device is made from an absorbable material which dissolves over time so once the ribbon has been ‘lifted’, no more surgery will be required to remove the device. It normally takes between 6 and 12 months for the ribbon to fully dissolve.

It should be noted that although this cosmetic surgery procedure shares similarities with the thread lift, neither the actual operation or the device used is the same.

Ribbon lifts are proving popular because there is little surgery involved hence the recovery time is very low. Also, just two small incisions are usually made so there is little scarring left from the surgery. This cosmetic surgery works best when the ribbon is placed deep to the muscle layer and fat as opposed to on top of the muscle and fat.

Madonna wowed the crowds at the Academy Awards last week, however her youthful appearance has had many wondering if the Material Girl has had cosmetic surgery.

With a smooth, glowing complexion, there are many in the plastic surgery industry who believe that Madonna has had a procedure known as the ’ribbon lift’.

The ribbon lift is a relatively new cosmetic procedure which takes around 30 minutes to complete. A dissolvable ribbon is tunnelled underneath the skin of the face. This ribbon has tiny hooks on it that attach to the face’s muscle and underlying tissues. Once the ribbon is in place, it is pulled upwards to lift the area. The ribbon then dissolves naturally after around two months, whilst the results of the procedure last around three years.

Speaking to Grazia magazine, renowned plastic surgeon Alex Karidis says he believes that Madonna has had this ribbon face lift and that prior to the ceremony, the pictures showing the swelling in her face are telltale signs of the procedure. He also claims that the ribbon has not dissolved fully yet, hence Madonna wore her hair loose at the awards to cover the evidence.

Should you wish to have a similar procedure done, it is available at many Beverly Hills clinics for around $6,000.
