However could Botox actually be giving you wrinkles?

Cosmetic practitioners have long noted that by freezing certain muscles, others will often start to be used more as your body starts to compensate. Dr David Becker has now published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology showing that by using Botox, you may in fact be giving yourself extra wrinkles.

“Paralysis of a set of muscles might lead to recruitment of other muscle groups in an attempt to reproduce the conditioned activity being blocked – resulting in more prominent muscle activity in adjacent regions,” Becker explains. In short, by freezing some muscles, others will compensate and this might mean you end up with a new, different set of lines and wrinkles on your face.

For women who have had Botox injections to their face the most tell-tale new lines are across the bridge of the nose. These lines are now colloquially known as ‘bunny lines’ because if you wrinkle your nose like a bunny, you’ll tend to see this area of your nose wrinkle up. These wrinkles are so well known that many look for them in celebrities to see if they can work out who has had Botox. Celebrities such as Amanda Holden and Dannii Minogue are said to have these bunny lines across the bridge of their nose when they smile, neatly demonstrating the principle. Although it must be stressed that not everyone with bunny lines has had Botox – there are many people who have bunny lines naturally.

Naturally, you can pre-empt the bunny lines Botox problem by having Botox injected across the bridge of the nose to stop the new wrinkles forming in the first place and many Botox practitioners are now recommending this for their patients. Of course the question then becomes where the wrinkles will appear instead of the nose and some Botox aficionados have revealed that they are now finding some wrinkles under their eyes instead.

Cosmetic surgery is often seen as a women’s interest however in the UK at least, more and more men are starting to take a greater interest in their appearance.

Almost one in five Botox patients in the UK are now said to be male. The trend is mainly down to two influences – the tough job market where personal appearance can make or break an interview, and the fact that more and more male celebrities (such as Simon Cowell and Gordon Ramsay) are coming clean about their cosmetic treatments.

X-Factor judge and music mogul Cowell has admitted to having had Botox. He was so impressed with the results that he recommended them to his friend chef Gordon Ramsay. Although Ramsay found Botox didn’t help his wrinkles, he soon discovered that facial fillers did help.

But has the Botox backlash begun?

Despite it’s popularity, celebrity Botox regulars are starting to turn their backs on the face freezing injections.

First, Lulu and Amanda Holden announced that they were no longer going to have Botox injections. Then, Dannii Minogue followed suit after some X-Factor viewers commented that in last year’s series, her face was almost immovable and expressionless.

With almost 55,000 women in the UK alone having Botox for cosmetic reasons each year, has Botox reached it’s popularity peak?

Some women find that they have unwanted side effects after their Botox injections such as severe headaches. However cosmetic surgeons are keen to point out that side effects are most often problematic because of poor practice and less-than-reputable clinics.

Botox also tends to leave the patient with a slightly startled look – a tell-tale sign that Botox has been administered. With injections needing to be topped up around four times a year, the current economic climate will also be making some women question whether their regular Botox injections are actually a good use of money or not.

Despite the public revelation that some celebrities are turning their backs on the wrinkle-busting injections, plenty of other celebrities are still rumoured to be having their regular Botox fix. With any cosmetic procedure, there are bound to be a few people who experience problems and here at CosmeticSurgeryBible, we believe that Botox is firmly here to stay for the next few years at least.

Thankfully, Botox appears to be the answer.

There is much pressure on women to get back to their pre-pregnancy shape as soon as possible after birth. One of the biggest complaints is a saggy chest area. As women get older, the chest area is one of the giveaways to a woman’s age as the area starts to sag, particularly in sun-worshippers, and wrinkles start to appear.

Botox has many uses however it is most commonly associated with helping to make the face look younger by reducing the look of lines and wrinkles. This technique is now being extended to other areas of the body to help them stay looking youthful for longer.

The ‘Breastox’, as it has been termed, is not cheap at around £1,000 per session however the injections are great for a boost of confidence, particularly in new Mums – although the treatment is not recommended for anyone who has given birth in the last three months.

The Breastox procedure involves an anaesthetic cream being rubbed into the chest area. Around a dozen injections of Botox are made into the pectoralis minor chest muscle. This muscle is then ‘frozen’, leading other muscles to compensate and strengthen thus casuing the bust to lift. This lifting effect ensures that wrinkles are smoothened out and the area perks up.

The best candidates for this Breastox procedure are women in the 20s and 30s with A or B cup breasts. It will take about a fortnight before the full effects of the injections are seen, and the results will last around three or four months before more injections are required.

At around £1,000 per session, Breastox Botox injections are not cheap – and the total costs may end up being £4,000 a year. If a patient likes the results from this cosmetic procedure, it is worth looking into having a full breast lift operation because although the initial outlay is more, in the long-run a breast lift may be the cheaper option.

Minogue has said that she has taken the comments on board and is going to stop her Botox injections.

“I see the comments,” she commented in an interview with Grazia magazine. “Plastic. All Botox.

“I can see what people see, but I have to say that while I have been open about doing it [Botox], I’m not doing it now.

“For the X Factor is it actually quite useful to be able to have facial expressions!”

A mini facelift is being hailed as a cure for migraines. The facelift is combined with Botox and is said to help cure some patient’s migraines.

Current migraine drugs do not work for everyone. Botox is one option for migraines but is not a permanent solution and also does not work in all cases. However one cosmetic surgeon has discovered that by combining a forehead lift with Botox can help relieve the pain of migraines in around 90 percent of patients, with few side effects.

Dr Guyuron discovered that by removing the supercilli muscle in the face – the major muscle involved in frowning – seemed to stop or lessen migraines in many of his patients. Dr Guyuron believes that migraine headaches are caused by nerves in the face, neck and/or scalp being irritated by overly tight muscles so by loosening up these muscles, the pain can be cured.

The procedure involves having Botox injected into the supercilli muscle, freezing it and releasing some of the pressure on the surrounding nerves. A small cut is then made into the muscle and a small part is removed. The gap in the muscle is filled in with fat, normally taken from the upper eyelid. This cosmetic procedure not only tends to ease migraine headache pain but also smooths out frown lines giving the patient a more youthful look.

Dr Guyuron has started some tests on the procedure by comparing this surgery against a dummy treatment where patients are operated on but their muscles are left intact. Initial results show that 57 percent of patients who had the full operation have been fully cured after a year compared with just 4 percent on the dummy operation. 83 percent on patients who had the full operation said that after a year, their migraines had fully stopped or the pain was significantly less.

Other doctors have been working on similar procedures and have reported similar results.

Actress Fay Ripley has said she is considering Botox as she wants to iron out some of the wrinkles on her face. Her inspiration appears to be felow actress Amanada Holden who has recently had a course of Botox. Ripley claims one of the reasons why she hasn’t yet tried the injections is that she is scared they will hurt.

“I really need it and I haven’t had it – it’s a nightmare,” she explained in an interview with The People. “Amanda Holden looks bloody brilliant, she didn’t need it.

“’I don’t really want the award for being the wrinkliest actress on telly so I suppose I should have it at some point. I am not flying any flag for older women.

“The only reason I haven’t done it so far is that I’m too embarrassed. I also have a very low pain threshold and I am scared that it will hurt.

“I don’t want to look foolish because quite a few ladies who do it do look a bit daft. I guess I just have to find the right surgeon.

“Everyone is obsessed with it [age]. ‘I feel like everyone is looking at my face and saying, ‘Go on then, I dare you’.”

Botox has gone even more plastic with the release of “The Botox Cosmetic benefits card.”

The Botox benefits card is being offered to existing patients at particular US clinics. If the patients pay for their treatment with their Botox card, the receive $25 towards their next treatment provided the treatment is within the next 6 months.

The card looks set to be popular with those women who have Botox on a regular basis already as $25 off each Botox treatment could add up to a neat saving over a year.

However the card acts like a loyalty card in that patients will only receive the $25 discount when the card is swiped at the clinic who provided the card, and the treatment can also only be taken at that clinic. The Botox cosmetic benefits card and associated rewards can only be used by the person who activated it.

The FDA have approved Dysport for the US aesthetic market. Dysport is similar to Botox in that it is derived from the botulinium toxin. However it is claimed that Dysport is superior to Botox in that it acts more quickly to reduce and remove wrinkles and the toxin does not spread to other parts of the body other than the injection side, minimising risk.

Dysport has been co-developed by Ipsen SA and the Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation. Medicis are already well known in the cosmetic surgery and aesthetic market thanks to their Restylane and Perlane facial fillers.

Dysport should be available in America in the next one to two months and it is anticipated that the injections will be slightly cheaper than Botox. It is also claimed that Dysport required fewer injections with longer lasting results.

It is anticipated that Dysport will soon become more popular than Botox thanks to it’s cheaper price, longer lasting results and fewer side effects.

GBotox has many different applications in the cosmetic industry, the most well-known of which is for treating wrinkles. Botox can also be used for treating migraines, helping to stop sweating, to help cure depression and to help treat enlarged prostates. However a new treatment using Botox has now been discovered to help treat dysfunctional vocal chords.

By injecting Botox into the larynx, it weakens the muscles there making it easier for the patient to speak according to Dr. Andrew Blitzer of the Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York. Dr. Blitzer is reported to have successfully treated a number of patients suffering from speech impediments by injecting them with Botox.

Botox is one of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures on the market and since it’s release in the mid 1990s has seen over 17 million treatments. Botox is a poison that helps to paralyze muscles. Over time, the Botox injection will wear off and have to be reapplied.
